Introducing a new dog to an existing one can sometimes prove to be a challenge, but dachshund Eaden proved she could thrive even with five large German Shepherds.
In a viral video uploaded to TikTok on September 16, user gsdxfive said that Eaden was recently introduced to her German shepherd housemates Coal, Izzy, Eleven, Xabi, and Maus.
"We got a baby sau-sis," the TikTok user wrote in the video caption before a series of clips showed Eaden's recent adventures with the German shepherds.
One of the clips showed Eaden reaching up to a water bowl placed fairly high up for the other dogs and was captioned "getting used to big dog obstacles."
Another part of the video, which can be seen here, showed Eaden climbing up over one of her large brothers as she tried to get around the room.
Eaden could then be seen playing with the much larger dogs before she snuggled up to them and even appeared to help one with some dentistry work by licking one of her siblings' teeth.
"We call her the tiny dentist," the TikTok user wrote. Since being shared, the video has attracted an estimated 3.9 million views and more than 374,700 likes.
Newsweek has contacted gsdxfive for comment via TikTok.
Introducing New Dog To Existing Ones
According to a 2020 article on the pet health website petMD, there are several things to consider when introducing a new dog to your existing one in order to avoid a furious response, which includes:
- Find a neutral spot to make introductions that is not "claimed" by one dog or the other such as an outdoor space.
- Watch for positive dog body language such as a "waggy body" which is a sign things are going well. Likewise, look out for tense posture and don't send a dog back into the interaction if they run over to you as it indicates they might need a break.
- Walk the dogs together with a comfortable buffer distance unless they are relaxed around each other.
- Allow the dogs to interact off-leash if you feel comfortable with how they are interacting.
- Introduce your new dog to the home while the other one is away. If possible ask someone to walk your resident dog while the new dog investigates the area and make sure to pick up any dog treats or toys that could create tension between the dogs.
- Don't throw a "welcome to the family party" and instead maintain your resident dog's typical daily schedule and set aside one-on-one time with them.
